I love bringing the joy of chocolate making to schools and groups of all kinds. I travel to you, so there’s no need to arrange transport β just a classroom, hall, or any space with a table, a plug socket, and access to a fridge (a must for these sessions), and I’ll turn it into a fully functioning chocolate factory for the session. Hands-on, memorable, and always a hit.
Once everyone is kitted up in a hair net and apron, each person makes their own chocolate bar and chocolate lollipop with a transfer pattern on. Whilst the chocolate sets, I show everyone a real cocoa pod and we talk about how chocolate is made.
How My Workshops Link to the Curriculum
My workshops naturally connect to several parts of the National Curriculum, which is why teachers often build a full lesson around the visit rather than treating it as “just” a treat day.
Key Stage 1
Science β comparing everyday materials and observing how they change (melting chocolate is a perfect hands-on example)
Geography β learning about hot and cold places in the world and where our food comes from.
Design & Technology β cooking and nutrition, understanding where food comes from.
Key Stage 2
English/Literacy β a great tie-in for classes reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as their class novel, a popular Year 3/4 choice.
Science β states of matter and reversible changes (melting and tempering chocolate is a brilliant real-world demonstration) β same Science link as above.
Geography β trade, natural resources, and the journey cocoa takes from farm to bar, including Fair-trade β same Geography link as above.
History β chocolate’s roots in Maya civilisation, one of the named non-European society options in the KS2 history curriculum.
Key Stage 3
Science (Chemistry) β the particulate nature of matter, states of matter, and pure/impure substances and mixtures. Chocolate is a genuinely great real-world example here β tempering is a hands-on demonstration of changes of state, and chocolate itself is a mixture (cocoa solids, cocoa butter, sugar, milk)
Science (Earth and atmosphere β the rock cycle) β this is where chocolate becomes a brilliant hands-on model for how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks form:
- Igneous β melted chocolate poured and left to cool and harden, just like magma cooling into rock
- Sedimentary β layers of grated or crushed chocolate (different types/colours work well) pressed together to represent sediment compacting over time
- Metamorphic β pressing and gently heating the “sedimentary” layers to show how existing rock changes under heat and pressure
Citizenship β how economic decisions are made, trade, and the functions and use of money. A natural fit for discussing fair trade and ethical sourcing in a real business context
Key Stage 4 β Careers, Business & Enterprise
I don’t offer formal work experience placements, but I love coming in to talk to older pupils about what it’s actually like to run a small business β from the idea, to the day-to-day reality, to actually making it work. Sessions like this count towards schools’ statutory careers guidance, specifically Gatsby Benchmark 5: encounters with employers and employees.
This works brilliantly for careers weeks, enterprise days, or PSHE/careers lessons, alongside a hands-on chocolate-making session.
SEN and SEMH Schools
I’ve hosted many workshops with SEN and SEMH schools and they’re consistently some of my favourite sessions to run. The hands-on, sensory nature of chocolate making works brilliantly, and I’m happy to adapt pacing, group size and structure to suit your pupils’ needs. Please get in touch to talk through what would work best for your setting.
Home Education Groups
I also welcome home education groups β whether it’s a one-off session or a regular co-op meet-up, I can tailor the workshop to your group’s size and interests.
Everything I do can be adapted to your needs I’m happy to link the workshop to whatever your class is studying, including:
- The history of chocolate β from cacao bean to bar
- Fair trade and ethical sourcing
- What it’s like to run a chocolate business (great for business studies or careers sessions)
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, if that’s your class topic
- Chocolate as a general topic, with a science and geography angle on where cocoa grows
My best price is Β£13pp for a minimum of 30 people, and I can host up to 100 children in a day. Teachers and TAs assisting get to join in for free β you deserve it after all! For groups smaller than 30, I can still come and visit, but the price may be a little higher.
I also offer this workshop and price to charities, brownies, guides, scouts, rainbows, or any other young group that might enjoy it.
I hold an up-to-date DBS check, full public liability insurance, and complete risk assessment for every session I run, whether at the factory or on-site at a school or venue.
